HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS NEED BUSINESS KNOWLEDGE

No matter what industry kids end up in, business will be a part of it!

Whether they’ll be producing art, starting a business, or working for the state, the mechanics of business and the degree to which they are versed in them, makes a big difference to how well they’ll perform.

Some weeks ago, after coordinating a business skills program for high school students from diverse cultural backgrounds and geographies, I strengthened my conviction that business education is crucial in schools. Here are some reasons:

Global Perspective Matters: High school students are interested in understanding global business trends and challenges. Incorporating discussions about international markets, cultural considerations, and the impact of globalization resonates with their desire to prepare for a connected world.

Relevance and Engagement: Students respond positively when they perceive the content as relevant to their future aspirations and current interests. Tailoring the program to address their specific needs and goals increases engagement and motivation to learn.

Balancing Theory and Practice: While theoretical knowledge is essential, students also value practical skills that they can apply immediately. Balancing theory with practical exercises and real-world examples helps them see the relevance of what they're learning.

Feedback and Reflection: Students value a learning environment where their opinions and feedback are considered. Encouraging open dialogue and reflection sessions provides an opportunity for students to voice their thoughts, ask questions, and gain deeper insights into the material.

Diversity Impacts Learning: This diversity can enrich discussions and problem-solving activities, but it also requires considering cultural sensitivities and adjusting teaching methods to accommodate various learning styles.

Confidence Building: Engaging in discussions, presentations and teamwork activities can boost students' self-confidence in their abilities. Encouraging them to step out of their comfort zones contributes to personal growth and skill development.

Soft Skills are Important: Alongside business-specific skills, students recognize the importance of developing soft skills such as self-knowledge, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. These skills are considered crucial for success in any career!
